Review: Gears of War 2

Grizzled hero Marcus Fenix takes his chain-sawing Lancer rifle to the monstrous Locusts again. Gears of War 2 continues the epic sci-fi story of a squad of soldiers fighting to preserve humanity against the onslaught of a genocidal horde that emerged from the ground.

Game type: Third-person shooter.

Maker: Published by Microsoft Game Studios, developed by Epic Games, Inc.

Platforms: Xbox 360.

Hits: Gears of War 2 tells a grand, grim story, with the fate of humanity itself riding on the burly, armored shoulders of Marcus Fenix. The largeness of many of the environments and foes, even though much of the story takes place underground, makes you feel swept up in huge events.

The boss fights in the original Gears were crazy hard, to the point of maddening. Gears 2 is better because it ratchets back the difficulty a little bit, so you can enjoy the challenge more and savor the story without beating your head against a wall.

Everybody knows that Gears 2 includes blood-splattering, intense combat action, but the personal drama of the characters' stories pulls you into it. One cutscene in particular is the most painfully emotional moment I've ever felt in a video game. My son and I played the campaign in split-screen co-op (which is another great feature), and that scene left us both in a stunned, lingering silence. If you've played the game, you probably know what I'm talking about, but I don't want to give it away if you haven't seen it yet. I'd love to talk about it in more detail, to deconstruct the moment like I'd discuss a compelling, layered scene in a movie, but I hate spoilers. The fact that a video game even has a moment like that is very telling, though.

Misses: The cover system, which makes you stick to door facings and other obstacles, can make you fumble around like your boot laces are tied together sometimes while you're under fire. It slows you down so much that I often avoid using it, preferring to sidestep quickly with my shot lined up. You also can't jump over anything unless you first take cover.

http://blog.al.com/techcetera/2008/11/large_ChainsawDuelonBridge.jpg

The chainsaw looks really cool, but even though Gears has a third-person viewpoint, it's hard to see what's happening in close quarters with the camera leaping around your shoulders. I have terrible luck with the Lancer's chain saw. I never can get it to rev up and cut when I want it to, and I'll end up standing there with it idling like I'm taking a break from cutting firewood while a Locust eviscerates me. Why is this so hard? Do I have to keep revving? Do I rev it twice, or just hold down the melee button? I did better just shooting them, which disappointed me. I had really wanted to wail on them with the chain saw.

The online multiplayer is fun when you finally start playing, but the matchmaking process for every session took way too long and made me wonder if it was worth the wait. (On Thursday, Epic posted a note that they have patched the game to help with this wait issue, so I'm eager to play this weekend to see if they've fixed it.)

Content Rating: Mature for gore and strong language, but both can be toggled off in the game settings.

Recommendation: Gears of War 2 is one of the very best shooters for the Xbox 360. The ponderous, heavily armored Gears characters give the game a very different feel from the leaping of Halo 3 or the twitch action of the Call of Duty series. It's a great shooter, if you like shooters. But behind the angry buzz of the chain saws, and beneath the battle-beaten armor, Gears of War 2 has a real heart, and that's what makes it so good.

Timothy Geithner, U.S. Treasury Secretary Nominee

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/data?pid=avimage&iid=iMYXi7atJnfs

Timothy F. Geithner, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, is President-elect Barack Obama's pick for U.S. treasury secretary. Geithner was closely involved in recent talks surrounding the failure of investment bank Lehman Brothers and the bailout of the insurance giant AIG. Geithner has called for streamlined federal supervision of financial markets, saying that the current system of oversight has created "perverse incentives" for financial actors. We need to "move to a simpler framework--with a more uniform set of rules applied evenly across entities involved in similar functions, and a more effective balance of regulation and market discipline," he said in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations in March 2008. He also said banks must be "subjected to a stronger form of consolidated supervision than our current framework provides."

Geithner had a previous thirteen-year stint at the Treasury Department, starting in 1988 when he joined the international affairs division. He became undersecretary for international affairs at Treasury during the later years of the Clinton administration.

In 2001, Geithner left Treasury to become a senior fellow in international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as director of a CFR Task Force on trade policy that recommended the United States expand free trade. A report published by that task force called on Congress to grant Trade Promotion Authority to President George W. Bush, which he was given by a narrow vote margin.

From 2001 to 2003, Geithner was director of the Policy Development and Review Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). There, he helped craft the IMF's $30.4 billion bailout of the Brazilian economy in September 2002. He also worked on bailouts of the Indonesian, Mexican, and South Korean economies.

Geithner has a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in international economics and East Asian studies. He has studied Japanese and Chinese and has also lived in East Africa, India, and China.

Lots of Sex May Prevent Erectile Dysfunction

http://www.topnews.in/health/files/erectile-dysfunction.jpg

Frequent sexual intercourse may cut down on a man's chances of developing erectile dysfunction, Finnish researchers report.

"This is the same as any other part of the body. It's what we in vascular surgery refer to as the 'use it or lose it' concept," said Dr. Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad, an associate professor of urology at UMDNJ New Jersey Medical School Hackensack University Medical Center. "Sexual activity will promote maintenance of normal erectile function down the line."

The report was published in the July issue of The American Journal of Medicine.

In the study, led by Dr. Juha Koskimaki, from Tampere University Hospital's Department of Urology, researchers collected data on 989 Finnish men aged 55 to 75 years old.

The researchers found that men who said they had sexual intercourse less than once a week had twice the risk of developing erectile dysfunction, compared with men reporting having sexual intercourse once a week.

Among men who had sexual intercourse less than once a week, there were 79 cases of erectile dysfunction per 1,000 men. That number dropped to 32 cases per 1,000 among men who said they had sexual intercourse once a week, and it dropped even further, to 16 per 1,000, among men who said they had sexual intercourse three or more times a week, the researchers reported.

The frequency of morning erections was not associated with the incidence of moderate erectile dysfunction, the researchers noted.

However, the development of complete erectile dysfunction could be predicted from the frequency of morning erections. Among men with less than one morning erection a week, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction was 2.5-fold greater than among men who had two to three morning erections per week.

"Regular intercourse has an important role in preserving erectile function among elderly men, whereas morning erection does not exert a similar effect," Koskimaki said in a statement. "Continued sexual activity decreases the incidence of erectile dysfunction in direct proportion to coital frequency."

Sadeghi-Nejad said there is a scientific basis for this finding, and it also has implications for rehabilitation of patients after prostate cancer treatment.

http://www.dbtechno.com/images/erectile_dysfunction_heart_disease.jpg

"What is very hot these days is what we can do to rehabilitate people who develop erection problems after prostate cancer surgery or radiation therapy," Sadeghi-Nejad said. "Anything you can do to increase oxygenation in the penis will help get patients back to normal."

If one can naturally engage in behaviors that increase blood flow to the penis, it will have a positive effect in preventing erectile dysfunction, Sadeghi-Nejad said.

Sadeghi-Nejad noted that the study only addressed intercourse, and not masturbation. "This is essentially the same concept," Sadeghi-Nejad said. "Anything you can do to bring blood to the penis is beneficial," he added.

Yvette Mimieux

http://erkelzaar.tsudao.com/stars/mimieux/Yvette%20Yoga.jpg

Yvette Carmen Mimieux
(born January 8, 1942) is a now-retired American movie and television actress. She was born in Los Angeles, California to a French father and Mexican mother, Carmen Montemayor.

Biography

In 1960, Mimieux appeared in the hugely popular teen movie Where The Boys Are as well as George Pál's 1960 film version of H.G. Wells' classic 1895 novel, The Time Machine playing the character 'Weena', co-starring Rod Taylor. The Time Machine was followed by The Light in the Piazza (1962) with Olivia de Havilland. In 1963, Mimieux appeared in Diamond Head and Toys in the Attic.

At 5'4", 107 lbs, with 34"-21.5"-35" measurements (according to 1963's Movie Life Yearbook), Mimieux was widely regarded as a sex symbol during the 1960s. This perhaps affected her acting career, in which serious roles became increasingly elusive. Many of the films in which she appeared after 1963 were both critical and commercial failures. She later appeared in numerous television series and made-for-television movies.

Mimieux appeared in a 1964 episode of Dr. Kildare entitled "Tyger Tyger" that proved one of the most memorable of the series, and was one of the highest rated shows of the year. She played an epileptic surfer girl whom Dr. Kildare falls in love with. She is forced to choose between abandoning surfing or risking death by following her passion despite the risk of having a seizure in the ocean.

Mimieux staged a brief comeback in the 1976 film Jackson County Jail, as a falsely imprisoned woman victimized by a sadistic guard and featuring a graphic nude rape scene. The movie eventually became a minor cult hit which spawned many imitators in the "women in prison" genre.

In later life, Mimieux co-starred in the first PG-rated Walt Disney Productions feature, The Black Hole. In 1984, she starred in Obsessive Love, a television movie about a female stalker, which she co-wrote and co-produced. Her last film, in 1992, was Lady Boss.

Personal life

Aside from her acting career, she is also an anthropologist and a real estate investor. She was married to film director Stanley Donen from 1972 to 1985, and is currently married to Howard Ruby (1986 - present), a founding partner and current Chairman of R & B Enterprises (now known as Oakwood Worldwide). She has no children.

Taylor dies after being shot at home

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2007/writers/phil_taylor/11/28/seantaylor/tx.sean.taylor.getty.jpg

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder's eyes were red. His voice cracked and was barely audible. Next to him sat coach Joe Gibbs, barely more composed.

Safety Sean Taylor 's violent death had left his team in tears and a league in mourning.

"This is a terrible, terrible tragedy," Snyder said.

Taylor died early Tuesday of a gunshot wound from an apparent intruder, a tragic end for a 24-year-old whose life was transformed by the birth of a daughter 18 months ago.

"We're going to miss him," Gibbs said. "I'm not talking about as a player. I'm talking about as a person."

A day earlier, Taylor and his girlfriend were awakened by loud noises, according to family friend Richard Sharpstein, who learned the details from Taylor's girlfriend, Jackie Garcia. He said Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection. Someone then broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor, Sharpstein said. Neither Taylor's daughter, Jackie, nor Taylor's girlfriend were injured in the attack.

The bullet damaged the femoral artery in Taylor's leg, causing significant blood loss. Taylor never regained consciousness, Sharpstein said, and the news that he had squeezed a nurse's hand late Monday only proved to give false hope.

"Maybe he was trying to say goodbye or something," Sharpstein said.

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said he did not know why Taylor returned to Miami during the weekend. Taylor was not required to accompany the team to Sunday's game at Tampa Bay because of a knee injury.

Sean Taylor was tied for the NFC lead for interceptions with five and was known as one of the league's hardest-hitting defensive backs.

Police had no description of a possible suspect and were investigating whether the shooting was connected to a break-in at Taylor's home eight days earlier, in which police said someone pried open a front window, rifled through drawers and left a kitchen knife on a bed.

"They're going to be looking at every angle," Miami-Dade Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said. "They're going to be looking at every lead."

Authorities from Miami-Dade Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were in and out of Taylor's home throughout the day. Police were seen taking a computer from Taylor's home.

A stream of family and friends arrived throughout the day, including his father, Florida City police chief Pedro Taylor. Some embraced outside; most came and went without speaking to a group of several dozen reporters.

Outside Pedro Taylor's home in suburban Miami-Dade County, the front lawn was filled with friends and family members who seemed to be in good spirits. Small children ran through the yard.

Several people brought large platters of food into the house. When he arrived home, he was met with embrace after embrace by friends and family members.

"We're all hurting," Taylor said. "I mean that's my child."

Taylor spoke privately with Miami-Dade homicide detectives and expressed confidence in the police investigation, but couldn't provide additional information.

Speaking of the killer, Taylor said: "I think one day he'll come to grips with himself and say, 'You know what, it was senseless' and he'll turn himself in."

The elder Taylor said he last saw his son a few weeks ago at a football game in Washington.

"We had a wonderful time," he said. "We laughed and joked and stayed up until 3 o'clock in the morning. We did what fathers and dads do and brothers and sisters, we just enjoyed each other."

According to The Miami Herald, Garcia arrived at the father's house with her daughter but declined to speak with reporters.

Dressed in black and clutching her 18-month-old baby, Garcia pulled up to Taylor's father's house in a black Mercedes.

With her brown hair held in a ponytail with a black band, Garcia carried her baby girl into the house. She was accompanied by her sister, and her father, Rene. The baby, wearing a pink bow in her hair and pink sneakers, was asleep in her mother's arms.

Taylor's father described the relationship between Garcia and his son as close, and "a bond that can't be broken."

Taylor said his son had grasped fatherhood "with opens arms," and it was part of his evolution from childhood to adulthood. Asked if Sean ever disappointed him, Taylor said he always tried to guide him.

"We all have high expectations, but we all understand that everyone has to travel the road and there are going to be some mishaps," he said. "But guess what? That's what we're here for to steer them in the right direction."

Back in Virginia, the Redskins struggled to cope and share their loss.

"I have never dealt with this," Gibbs said. "We're going one hour at a time here."

Gibbs said he planned to have the team practice as scheduled Wednesday, following a prayer service, in preparation for Sunday's home game against the Buffalo Bills. Snyder said the Redskins will honor Taylor by wearing a patch on their jerseys and the No. 21 on their helmets. The league is expected to decide Wednesday how the league will pay tributes to Taylor at this weekend's games.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sean's family, friends, teammates, and the Redskins' organization. This is a terrible tragedy involving the loss of a young man who leaves behind many people struggling to understand it," commissioner Roger Goodell said. "Our office is staying in close contact with the Redskins to provide all appropriate support to the club and Sean's family. We also are working to determine the facts surrounding this tragic event. We will honor the memory of Sean Taylor at all games this weekend."

There is little precedence on how to go forward, although several teams have dealt with tragedy in recent years. Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting on New Year's Day, the day after the season ended in a playoff loss. San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion died of a heart attack after a preseason game in September 2005. Minnesota Vikings tackle Korey Stringer died of heatstroke at a training camp practice in 2001. Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle was shot in the stomach by three armed robbers in southwest Miami in July 2005 and missed the following season.

Gibbs, Taylor's family and his teammates, past and present, did their best to describe a player very few got to know.

"Sean has been a close friend of mine since our days at the University of Miami," New York Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma said in a statement. "He was a great teammate and an even greater person. It is so hard for me to fathom that I am not going to be able to pick up the phone to call him."

Taylor had a great smile and a menacing sneer. He was extremely talented -- fast and powerful -- and genuinely had a chance to become one of the best safeties ever to play in the NFL.

"What got cut short here was a career that was going to go to a lot of Pro Bowls and have a lot of fun," Gibbs said.

"I am devastated over the loss of Sean Taylor," Miami coach Randy Shannon said. "When he was a student at the University of Miami, I got to know him as a person and as a football player. He was passionate about everything he did and was a great friend to his teammates. My thoughts are with his family."

Taylor was having the best season of his career on the field and had stayed out of trouble off the field since the birth of his daughter, Jackie, in May 2006. He was becoming a leader, and his teammates had elected him to the players' committee that meets regularly with Gibbs.

"I saw a real maturing process," Gibbs said.

He wasn't the only one to notice changes in Taylor after his daughter's birth.

"He was kind of a wild child, like myself," said New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, who played with Taylor at the University of Miami and worked out with him in the offseason. "But life changed for Sean after he had his baby girl. Fatherhood really changed him. He grew up and matured."

Redskins running back Clinton Portis agreed.

"It's hard to expect a man to grow up overnight," Portis said. "But ever since he had his child, it was like a new Sean, and everybody around here knew it. He was always smiling, always happy, always talking about his child."

Private and slow to trust anyone, Taylor rarely granted interviews. During his last known full-length interview, conducted with WTEM-AM in September, he spoke of the joy he felt when he made his daughter laugh, how he wanted to give her life experiences different from his own, and how he did not fear death.

"You can't be scared of death," he told the radio station. "When that time comes, it comes. ... You never see a person who has lived their life to the fullest. They sometimes feel sorry for like a child, maybe, that didn't get a chance to do some of the things they thought that child might have had a chance to do in life. I've been blessed. God's looked out for me, so, I'm happy."

Still, Taylor, drafted No. 5 overall by the Redskins in April 2004, got off to a rocky start in the NFL.

He had a drunken driving charge that was later dismissed. He skipped part of the NFL's mandatory rookie symposium. He fired two agents. He didn't like his contract. He refused to return Gibbs' calls during the offseason. And he was fined at least seven times for late hits, uniform violations and other on-field infractions.

In 2005, he was accused of pointing a gun during a fight over all-terrain vehicles near his Miami home, a legal battle that ended a year later when he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors and was sentenced to probation.

Recently, Taylor indeed was starting to make his past seem irrelevant. The baby helped him gain perspective, and other changes were making him a better football player.

Early in his career, linebacker LaVar Arrington nicknamed Taylor "The Grim Reaper." Taylor could hit as hard as anyone in the NFL, but he often went for the big impact at the expense of playing basic football. He would take wrong angles and miss tackles. Even so, he was enough of a presence to make the Pro Bowl last season.

This season, Taylor improved his diet and workout regimen and was given a new role. Instead of playing a hybrid safety position, he was a true free safety. He used speed and power to chase passes and intimidate receivers. His five interceptions tie for the league lead in the NFC, even though he missed the last two games because of a sprained knee.

"You think back to how much heat he took for everything," Portis said. "For missing camp, for not being around for this or that, for missing the rookie symposium. You come to the realization that all of that means nothing."

What is Hentai?

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee276/hitakishi/hentai.jpg

Hentai (変態 or へんたい) is a Japanese word that, in the West, is used when referring to sexually explicit or pornographic comics and animation, particularly Japanese anime, manga and computer games (see Japanese pornography). In Japan it can be used to mean "metamorphosis" or "abnormality". The word "hentai" has a negative connotation to the Japanese and is commonly used to mean "sexually perverted".

In Japanese the word hentai is a kanji compound of 変 (hen meaning "change" "weird" or "strange") and 態 (tai meaning "attitude" or "appearance"). The term is used as a shortened form of the phrase 変態性欲 (hentai seiyoku), or "sexual perversion". In slang, 変態 (hentai) is used as an insult meaning roughly "pervert" or "weirdo". The term is not often applied to pornography in Japan. Instead, terms such as 18-kin (18禁, literally "18-prohibited") meaning "prohibited to those not yet 18 years old", and seijin manga (成人漫画 "adult manga") are used when referring to pornography. The English letters AV are also used, standing for adult video.

H, or ecchi

The English use of "hentai" is more similar to the way the Japanese use the slang term エッチ (H, or ecchi), which refers to any sexually explicit content or behaviour. Ecchi is simply the spelling-out of the Japanese pronunciation of the letter H. The origins of this term are uncertain, but it may be a shortened form of hentai used as a polite codeword in the 1960s.

"H" in Japan is now broadly used to refer to all sexual content or activity[1]) So, "H manga" are manga with sexual content. Recently, the term "ero" (エロ), short for "erotic" but closer in meaning to "porn", is now used more often instead of "H".

Classification

There are two main categories of hentai: works that feature mainly heterosexual interactions (often abbreviated as "het"),[citation needed] and those that feature mainly homosexual interactions. This second group can be further split into yaoi and yuri subgroups. Yaoi refers to male homosexual pairings, and yuri to female homosexual pairings.

Yaoi commonly features males of ambiguous gender—in both physical appearance and mannerism—called bishōnen, literally "beautiful boy". Some feature biseinen ("beautiful man"), males of more masculine appearance than bishōnen. Less common are bara—larger, often heavily muscled and sometimes hairy males, the yaoi counterpart of the "bear" in gay pornography—as well as oyaji (meaning "daddy" or "uncle"), featuring middle-aged and elderly men. Yaoi also extends beyond the (sexually explicit) hentai genre, since it is an applies to any anime/manga material that includes male homosexuality. It is, however, distinct from shōnen-ai (literally, "boy-love"), in which two males merely express romantic feelings for each other without actually having sexual relations. Women interested in Yaoi are called "Fujoshi" (腐女子), which means "rotten girl" or "rotten woman". Compare fag hag.

Yuri is very similar to yaoi, except that the focus is on female homosexual interactions. The characters in yuri are known as "bishōjo", meaning "beautiful girl". Shōjo-ai ("girl love") is a western term for the female equivalent of shōnen-ai; in Japan these works are also called yuri.

The scope of hentai encompasses the entire range of sexual fetishes, including:

  • Bakunyū, the depiction of women with large breasts. Literally translated to "bursting breasts".
  • Futanari, depictions of hermaphrodites or transsexuals that have both phallic genitalia (penis with scrotum, only a penal shaft, or an enlarged clitoris) and vaginal genitalia or a feminine hourglass shape including breasts and a penis plus scrotum.
  • BDSM, A spectrum of consensual sexual activities considered to be "kinky" or non mainstream, including such topics as power exchange (domination and submission), bondage, sadomasochism, spanking, etc.
  • Bestiality
  • Breast-oriented torture and Breast bondage, BDSM practices focusing on breasts, many times coupled with a variety of torture
  • Erotic lactation
  • Lolicon, depicts prepubescent or preadolescent girls.
  • Maiesiophilia
  • Omorashi (オモラシ / おもらし / お漏らし) in which individuals struggle with a full bladder before finally wetting themselves(also known as watersports).
  • Urolagnia: Urinating.
  • Coprophilia: Feces.
  • Shotacon, the depiction of young boys having intercourse with other young boys or older men, depicting young boys with older women, known as "straight shota" in western jargon.
  • Tentacle rape, the depiction of tentacled creatures and sometimes monsters (fictional imaginative or otherwise, also includes alien-like creatures) engaging in sex or rape with girls and less often men.
  • Incest sexual activity with legal family members noticeably seen in The Sagara Family, a hentai computer game.

Hentai media

  • Adult anime, or hentai anime, is anime that relies primarily on sex.
  • Adult manga, or hentai manga, is manga designed for purely pornographic purposes. Plot is still used to develop character and setting, but most of the time, the ultimate goal is to show scenes of sexuality with few exceptions. Adult manga is often sold in convenience stores, book stores, and magazine stores in Japan, and also other public places such as airports, and is far more prolific and accessible than the U.S. adult comic book market. It is usually distributed in digest format, containing several stories by different artists (e.g. an anthology).
  • Adult CG artwork includes individual drawings by artists. Art can be available on websites, CD-ROMs, or in printed art books. CG artwork is used frequently in adult video games.
  • Adult video games, or eroge, are games with a pornographic element. They can include bishōjo games that involve character driven plots, and can exist as sex simulations.
  • Adult dōjinshi, or H dōjinshi, refers to a type of work that uses copyrighted characters presented in sexual situations. It usually refers to printed manga, but can also refer to any type of visual work depicting copyrighted characters, including video games, animation, and CG artwork. Familiarity with a particular character or setting can add a sense of relating to the character over a generic character used in mainstream hentai, making dōjinshi more appealing to fans of a particular work. Despite not representing characters and licensed properties as intended, companies often view these works as a free form of license recognition and advertising through dedicated fandom. Some mangaka create hentai dōjinshi with characters from their own manga, such as Kazushi Hagiwara, who himself created Bastard - Expansion, a pornographic dōjin with characters from Bastard!!
  • In Western fanfiction circles, hentai-based works are popularly referred to as "lemon", based on a more popular hentai anime anthology series called Cream Lemon. Fictions referred to as "lime" are ones in which the characters do everything short of having sexual intercourse with each other. In Japan, the works may be referred to as "lemon" or "pink" ("pink" having sexual connotations similar to the term "lime" in the west).

Dolphins' Davone Bess thankful for how far he has come

http://blogs.starbulletin.com/thephotolounge/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/bess.jpg

It's in the quiet moments that wide receiver Davone Bess can savor how well things are going. In those same instants, it's easy for him to wonder how bad things could have been.

In between meetings or after practice, Bess often will stroll the halls of the Dolphins' training facility, awed by the historic photos and famed jerseys on display that remind him how far he has come.

Sometimes, he gets a little careless and lets his mind take him back to life in jail.

It was just six years ago that Bess stared at bare walls for 15 months, serving time in juvenile detention centers and adult jails.

The kid from the Oakland inner-city high school had once looked like a refreshing success story, having earned a full ride to Oregon State.

That all changed the night he was arrested with stolen property in his car. He lost his athletic scholarship and almost everything else. But not his hope.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about it," Bess said. "But that made me the person I am today."

And now, after a season-ending knee injury to receiver Greg Camarillo, Bess will get another new opportunity. Today in St. Louis, the rookie will make his first start in the NFL.

His detour began in the summer of 2003, shortly after he graduated from Skyline High School. Bess said he stopped to pick up some friends who asked for a ride. He said he had no idea that his friends brought with them stolen items that police found during a traffic stop.

The summer he should have been training at Oregon State, he was in a juvenile detention center. The day the Beavers played their third game of the season, Bess turned 18 and was moved to county jail temporarily, even though he was convicted as a minor.

"I was doing that time for somebody else," he said.

He spent his last 10 months at a youth rehabilitation center in Byron, Calif. His mother, Chinell Carpenter, visited every week, driving the 90 minutes each way in tears.

"That was the worst thing I've ever been through in my life," she said. "That tore me apart."

Bess lived in a large, open dormitory with clinical white sheets. The only walls were the ones that kept the residents inside.

The oldest of the boys there, he would awake early, make his bed and spend a few minutes sitting quietly, wondering how his life had taken such a turn. Then he would head out with armed guards to work in the community.

He thought of his broken-hearted mother, who gave birth to him at 15 and had both her sons by 18, and persuaded the center to let him take classes at a local community college. He still wanted to reach college.

"I would always encourage myself: 'If you can get through this, you can get through anything,' " he said.

Then, the sport that had once promised him a future, when he was an all-city wide receiver and quarterback, was his savior again. A man who knew his high school coach brought him out to the center's 7-on-7 football team, which played squads from other facilities.

Soon, film of him in those games, along with tapes of his high school career, made their way to then-Hawaii coach June Jones, who offered him a scholarship. "I don't care about all that's happened," Bess remembers Jones telling him, "I believe the people who believe in you."

At Hawaii, Bess had the kind of career that many Division I recruiters had once expected of him. In three seasons, he caught 293 passes for 3,610 yards. Bess, the favorite target of Colt Brennan, became the only player in school history with three 1,000-yard seasons.

Jones' faith was rewarded.

"I wanted to prove to him, the whole coaching staff, even the state of Hawaii that I was worthy of a second chance," Bess said.

As a junior, Bess (5-foot-10, 190 pounds) was projected as a third-round draft pick. Since Brennan - a Heisman Trophy finalist - had declared for the NFL, Bess took the leap, too.

But a poor 40-yard dash time scared off teams on draft weekend. When he went undrafted, the Dolphins called immediately.

He would have to prove himself again. But that was the easy part. When others complained about the stifling heat and endless practices, he drew inspiration from his quiet walks through hallowed halls.

"I never take this opportunity for granted," Bess said. "I find myself walking through these hallways looking at the pictures, like, 'I'm really here.' That keeps me motivated."

He made an immediate impact on special teams, supplanting Ted Ginn Jr. as the punt returner because of his ability to change directions quickly and make people miss. Whatever Miami's expectations for him, Bess surpassed them.

"Every challenge that you put in front on him, he kind of figured a way through it," coach Tony Sparano said. "You started to look at him and think he was a veteran player."

That helped him work into Miami's rotation as a receiver, surpassing veterans such as Ernest Wilford, a free agent signee in his fifth season, and Brandon London, who won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants last year.

With Camarillo hurt, Bess - who has 24 catches for 275 yards with one TD - likely will play opposite the speedster Ginn. Coaches hope Bess can fill Camarillo's role as a sure-handed receiver in traffic.

"He can catch a BB in the dark," offensive coordinator Dan Henning said.

Despite his success in recent months and the praise he has received, Bess has not forgotten what it took for him to persevere.

"At a time when people are vulnerable and want to give up, he didn't," his mother said. "For him to still come out on top, it's a blessing."

NASA aims for shuttle landing today

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/space-shuttle-landing3.jpg

Space shuttle Endeavour is cleared to return to Earth today, as long as the weather cooperates.

Endeavour's seven-member crew is tentatively scheduled to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at about 1:20 p.m. Eastern. If wind and storm clouds interfere, NASA officials may have to move the landing to Edwards Air Force Base in California.

There are four landing opportunities today: two in Florida and two in California. But NASA will likely try for only three attempts before pushing the landing off until tomorrow.

Endeavour's crew has enough supplies to last until Tuesday, but NASA officials would like the crew on the ground no later than tomorrow.

WalletPop.com finds the Cowboy State coin ranks 9th as the least-liked coin in its reader poll

It has been out for about a year now, but the Wyoming quarter still gets no respect.

Dwight Brockman, owner of The Coin Shop in Cheyenne, knows why.

“It looks like a cookie,” he said. “It doesn’t have any detail.”

An online poll by a “hip” AOL Web site about money and personal finance puts the quarter with the familiar bucking horse and rider insignia in the bottom 10 of state quarters in terms of least-liked designs.

As of Friday, readers of the site, Walletpop.com, had the Wyoming quarter ranked No. 9.

The 44th coin in the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters Program, the Wyoming quarter went into circulation Sept. 4, 2007.

Brockman said there is demand among collectors, regardless of likeability, because the coin is part of the 50-state series. It is needed to complete the set.

The bucking horse and rider as a silhouette works for the license plate, he said, but not for a coin.

Ironically, because it is featureless, the Wyoming quarter stands out.

“It’s boring, but special,” Brockman said.

Indiana’s quarter -- with its Indy race car, map of the state, circle of stars and state motto: “Crossroads of America” -- was rated the best by the readers as of Friday.

The Web site is part of AOL’s effort to move from being an Internet access provider to a series of online information portals.

Walletpop.com “features short, newsy posts,” AOL says on its corporate site, as well as “in-depth analyses by a team of smart, hip writers.”

Apparently the readers don’t get cowboy chic, though.

HIM - Close To The Flame

http://msp170.photobucket.com/albums/u262/gnphere/HIM/him.gif

The kiss sweetest
And touch so warm
One smile kind
In this world so cold and strong

We're so close to the flame
Burning brightly
It won't fade away
Leave us lonely

The arms safest
And words so good
The faith deepest, yeah
In this world so cold and cruel

We're so close to the flame
Burning brightly
It won't fade away
Leave us lonely

So close to the flame
Burning brightly
Won't fade away
Leave us lonely

Close to the flame
Burning brightly
Won't fade away
Leave us lonely

Nice Thick Feathers, Russian Red

She said hey, wont you pick me up?
he said, well, what about at nine?
And she wakes up, its freezing cold outside
but hes not there, wherever he may fly?

Barely aware of her reality, she stands right by
the centre of the room.
Feathers, shes got nice thick feathers
shes put on, for she wanted to reach the violent kingdom.

Every time, she steps on what she calls
the misery land, for only bats and cops
forgets about his kisses and his voice.
He wore a suit with labels at the front.

Barely aware of her reality, she stands right by
the centre of the room.
Feathers, shes got nice thick feathers
shes put on, for she wanted to reach the violent kingdom.

Barely aware of ther reality, she stands right by
the centre of the room.

He Stopped Loving Her Today

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

(Chorus)
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

(Repeat Chorus)

George Jones

Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi

http://kwc.org/blog/resources/2008/canon-rebel-xsi.jpg

Canon has today announced a new compact digital SLR, the twelve megapixel EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi). On the surface a very similar camera to the EOS 400D, however there are a range of significant improvements; twelve megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0" LCD monitor, Live View with both AF modes (contrast-detect and passive), 14-bit processing and RAW, spot metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps continuous shooting, a larger viewfinder, SD/SDHC storage and a new higher capacity battery. All in all a fairly impressive range of usage oriented improvements and refinements.

Canon today launches its latest D-SLR, the EOS 450D. Featuring a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and a new 9-point AF system, the model presents consumers with an unprecedented level of image quality and versatility at this end of the market.

The EOS 450D employs features already proven in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor and a redesigned menu system that enables features such as direct control of Speedlite flash units from the camera LCD. A choice of 13 custom functions allows the photographer to customise the camera to their shooting style.

“The EOS 450D bears the fruits of more than 20 years of ongoing investment into EOS,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “This camera continues Canon’s policy of taking technologies proven in the professional arena and putting them within reach of a wider market of amateur photographers.”

The EOS 450D features:

* 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor
* Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System
* 3.5 frames per second
* 3.0” LCD with Live View shooting
* 9-point wide-area AF system with f/2.8 cross-type centre point
* Picture Style image processing parameters
* DIGIC III image processor
* Digital Photo Professional RAW processing software1
* Compact and Lightweight body
* Fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites

The EOS quality advantage

With all key components developed and manufactured in-house, EOS offers photographers a unique quality advantage. The EOS 450D’s specially designed 12.2 Megapixel sensor employs Canon’s high-sensitivity, low-noise CMOS technology to produce richly detailed images with minimal grain. The DIGIC III processor ensures superior image rendering and rapid response times, with an almost instant 0.1 start up. Image data is processed at 14 bits for Delivering a burst rate of 3.5 frames per second, the DIGIC III processor works with the image buffer to handle up to 53 JPEGs (6 in RAW) without interruption.

Built for better photos

The EOS 450D is designed to make photography a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience. Housed in a compact body that weighs less than 475 grams, the camera features an improved grip design that provides a natural, ergonomic fit with the user’s hands. A large, bright viewfinder makes image composition clearer and more comfortable. The menu system inherited from professional EOS cameras uses a simplified tab structure that does away with scrolling. It includes a user-defined My Menu tab for instant access to frequently used settings.

Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects. The new Auto Lighting Optimiser corrects brightness and contrast during image processing, while improving skin tones in portraits by ensuring correct exposure for faces. Photographers can also enable additional noise reduction for shots captured at high ISO speeds.

Live View

Available for the first time on a Canon consumer D-SLR, Live View mode makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when shooting from a tripod. The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth, 30fps video feed on the 3.0” LCD, which is 50% brighter than the screen of the EOS 400D. A grid line display and live histogram can be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Two types of auto focus are available: Quick AF flips the camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor; Live AF uses the image contrast data to focus - a method familiar to anyone upgrading from a compact digital camera.

For studio environments, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.

Other improvements

The EOS 450D complements its headline features with a host of smaller improvements that enhance the photographic experience. The viewfinder now displays all key exposure information including ISO speed. The addition of spot metering (4% of viewfinder) allows for greater control over exposure in tricky lighting conditions. PictBridge functionality has been expanded so that photographers can correct horizons and add picture effects before printing. A new high capacity battery extends shooting time on a single charge to a maximum of 500 shots.

Software

The EOS 450D is supplied with a comprehensive software suite that provides everything the photograph needs to manage and process images. This includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as Dust Delete Data and Picture Styles. The supplied Picture Style Editor software can be used to create custom Picture Styles for fine control over colour display. The camera also comes with EOS Utility, Image/Zoom Browser and Photostitch.
