Alfred Russel Wallace Achieves Fame

http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/once/wallace.jpg

Alfred Russel Wallace is finally achieving fame for his scientific discoveries, 95 years after his death. Although Charles Darwin receives much of the credit for the theory of natural selection, the thinking of Alfred Russel Wallace was critical for the development of the discipline.

Working independently of Charles Darwin, Wallace published his theories of natural selection. Darwin, upon reading Wallace's theories, published his own findings.

The work of Wallace is getting more attention since David Quanmen of National Geographic has written a new article about him, entitle The Man who wasn't Darwin.

"Wallace, famed during his life as Darwin's junior partner and for his other contributions to science and social thought, fell into obscurity after his death, in 1913. In recent decades his renown has been revivified, both by scholars who mine every aspect of Darwin's life—Wallace was a crucial part—and by a few popular writers," writes Quanmen.

It's a fitting tribute for a man who has been forgotten by many in modern society. Alfred Russel Wallace remains a pivotal figure in the way we all look at the origin of life.

Madonna Denies Reports of a $76-Million Divorce Settlement

http://www.topnews.in/light/files/Madonna-Guy-Ritchie1.jpg

Madonna and Guy Ritchie are slamming recent stories about their divorce settlement.

The joint statement – issued in London – came two days after Madonna's U.S. rep gave the Associated Press details of the supposed deal. Liz Rosenberg said that Madonna, 50, was set to hand over cash and property worth between $76 million and $92 million, calling it "one of the largest [divorce] payouts ever."

But now the couple calls that information "misleading and inaccurate."

The statement reads:

"We have tried to maintain a dignified silence regarding the details of our divorce for the last few months whilst accepting the obvious media interest.

"A misleading and inaccurate statement, specifically in relation to the sums of money involved, was wrongly issued to AP this week.

"The financial details of the settlement will remain private, save to say that both of us are happy with our agreement.

"Our primary concern, like any co-parents, is the care and well being of our children."

The couple – whose divorce will become final in January – have two sons, Rocco, 8, David, 3. Madonna has a daughter, Lourdes, 12, from her relationship with Carlos Leon.

Greek youths hang protest banners from Acropolis

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/media/ALeqM5jmBg1y5y42lJlVSymkBSumrjiTHQ?size=mhttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/media/ALeqM5idf7CZsdBnxsnjl368yYanUs6OMQ?size=mhttp://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/media/ALeqM5h7bVwE1W9Fqne7GuOMZ4UBP9eZAw?size=m

Protesters hung two giant banners off the Acropolis on Wednesday, with slogans calling for mass demonstrations across Europe and "resistance," after days of violent protests sparked by the fatal police shooting of a teenager in Athens.

About a dozen protesters held the pink banners over the walls of the ancient citadel, Greece's most famous monument, one bearing the word "Resistance" written in large black letters in four languages: Greek, English, Italian and German. The other called for mass demonstrations across Europe on Thursday.

The banners were taken down after two hours.

"There can be no justification for this action. This hurts the image of our country abroad ... it is unacceptable," government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said.

Student demonstrations are already planned in Athens and Greece's second largest city of Thessaloniki on Thursday to protest the Dec. 6 police killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

The riots that followed the teenager's death are the worst Greece has seen in decades, feeding off widespread dissatisfaction with the unpopular conservative government and anger over social inequality and economic hardship.

Hundreds of shops and banks were smashed, torched or looted as gangs of masked and hooded youths rampaged through cities night after night, setting up burning barricades in the streets and clashing with riot police who fired large amounts of tear gas. Retailers say the damage will cost them euro1.5 billion ($2 billion) in lost income.

More than 300 people were detained or arrested in the rioting.

Although the rioting has abated, small-scale attacks continue.

Police said about a dozen youths on motorcycles set fire to a police bus in central Athens. The driver managed to escape the fire and no one was hurt.

Also Wednesday, about 40 protesters occupied the offices of the Greece's largest labor union, the GSEE.

"I believe they have chosen the wrong target ... The GSEE does not govern this country. So it's wrong to undermine the labor unions," GSEE leader Yiannis Panagopoulos said.

About 100 high school students gathered outside the capital's main court complex, pelting riot police guarding the building with stones, eggs, rocks and yogurt to demand that those detained in the riots be freed.

In Greece's second largest city of Thessaloniki, police said a bank and a local citizens advice office were firebombed before dawn Wednesday in attacks that caused damage but no injuries.

After a week of violence, many protesters have begun using different tactics to make themselves heard.

On Tuesday, a group of youths stormed their way into Greece's state television and radio studios, forcing broadcasters to put out anti-government messages.

Ten young protesters disrupted a state NET television news broadcast of the prime minister's speech, appearing live on national television carrying banners that read: "Stop watching, get out onto the streets" and "Free everyone who has been arrested."

In Thessaloniki, protesters broke into three local radio stations, agreeing to leave only when a protest message was read on the air.

Greece's opposition Socialists have accused Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' conservative government of mishandling the crisis and worsening the effects of the global economic downturn. The Socialists are calling for Karamanlis to resign and call new elections, a demand he has rebuffed.

Parliament starts debate Wednesday on Greece's 2009 budget, which includes at least 4 billion euros ($5.6 billion) in new taxes.

S.E.C. Says It Missed Signals on Madoff Fraud Case

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/54/United_States_Securities_and_Exchange_Commission.svg/600px-United_States_Securities_and_Exchange_Commission.svg.png

The Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday night that it had missed repeated opportunities to discover what may be the largest financial fraud in history, a Ponzi scheme whose losses could run as high as $50 billion.

The commission said it received credible allegations about the scheme at least nine years ago and will immediately open an internal investigation to examine why it had failed to pursue them aggressively.

The S.E.C. issued the statement hours after Bernard L. Madoff, the 70-year-old Wall Street executive accused of operating the scheme, discussed the fraud with federal authorities at a meeting in New York on Tuesday, according to people briefed on the meeting.

“Our initial findings have been deeply troubling,” Christopher Cox, the S.E.C. chairman, said in his statement. The commission received “credible and specific allegations regarding Mr. Madoff’s financial wrongdoing,” but did not respond aggressively, he said.

“I am gravely concerned by the apparent multiple failures over at least a decade to thoroughly investigate these allegations or at any point to seek formal authority to pursue them,” Mr. Cox said.

Moreover, Mr. Cox said, the commission will investigate “all staff contact and relationships with the Madoff family and firm, and their impact, if any, on decisions by staff regarding the firm.” Mr. Cox added that he had ordered S.E.C. staff to recuse themselves from the investigation if they had “more than insubstantial personal contacts with Mr. Madoff or his family.”

One of the commission’s investigative teams that had examined the Madoff firm was headed by a lawyer named Eric Swanson, who served for 10 years as a lawyer at the commission and left in 2006 while he was an assistant director of the office of compliance inspections and examinations in Washington.

In 2007, Mr. Swanson married Shana Madoff, a niece of Bernard L. Madoff and daughter of his brother, Peter Madoff, the firm’s chief compliance officer. Ms. Madoff is the firm’s compliance attorney.

Eric Starkman, a spokesman for Mr. Swanson, said that Mr. Swanson’s “romantic relationship with his wife began years after the compliance team he helped supervise made an inquiry about Bernard Madoff’s securities operations.” And Randy Williams, a spokesman for Mr. Swanson’s current employer, BATS Exchange in Kansas City, said that Mr. Swanson had not participated in any inquiry of into the Madoff firm or its affiliates while he was involved in a relationship with Ms. Madoff.

Besides investigating Mr. Madoff, regulators are now in the embarrassing position of examining whether they should have caught him sooner.

Mr. Madoff kept several sets of books and false documents and lied to regulators when they questioned him in previous examinations of his firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, Mr. Cox said.

Investigators never used subpoena powers to obtain information, but rather “relied on information voluntarily produced by Mr. Madoff and his firm,” Mr. Cox said.

When he was arrested last week, Mr. Madoff estimated that investors lost as much as $50 billion in the fraud, according to court filings. Mr. Madoff has said the scam was a Ponzi scheme, a type of fraud in which early investors are paid off with money from later victims, until no more money can be raised and the scheme collapses.

Over the decades, Mr. Madoff steadily expanded his circle of investors, drawing in small individual investors, charities, pension funds, prominent billionaires and European banks. On Tuesday, a Vienna bank, Bank Medici, became the latest major institution to acknowledge it was a client of Mr. Madoff, saying it had $2.1 billion invested with him. Institutions and individuals have now reported losses of more than $20 billion.

Stephen Harbeck, the chief executive of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, which has taken control of Mr. Madoff’s firm through a trustee, said the firm appeared to have multiple sets of books and that he was unsure how much money, if any, Mr. Madoff’s clients would eventually recover.

“The trustee and SIPC have been involved in this case for about 24 hours,” Mr. Harbeck said. “You’re talking about an ongoing fraud that lasted for decades.”

Attorneys for Mr. Madoff declined to comment on Tuesday night about Mr. Madoff’s conversations with government authorities.

“We have said from the beginning that we are cooperating fully with the government investigation,” said Ira Lee Sorkin, one of the lawyers. When pressed, Mr. Sorkin said he had used “we” to refer to “the company, whose sole shareholder is Bernie Madoff.” Mr. Sorkin would not confirm that Mr. Madoff himself was providing first-hand cooperation.

Extensive cooperation from Mr. Madoff could substantially shorten the time it will take for regulators to track down any available assets, locate any other people who may have been involved in the fraud and determine whether investors will recover any of their losses.

The first indication that Mr. Madoff might be talking to authorities came at midmorning, when a federal judge delayed a bond hearing for Mr. Madoff that had originally been set for 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

At the request of federal prosecutors, the hearing was rescheduled for the same time on Wednesday. No reason for the postponement was given, nor would the federal prosecutor’s office or Mr. Madoff’s lawyers comment on the delay.

Mr. Madoff was arrested at his Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan last Thursday by F.B.I. agents, after his two sons — both of whom work for the company — reported that he had confessed to them that his money-management business was “basically, a giant Ponzi scheme” and “a big lie.”

The criminal complaint under which he was arrested charged him with a single count of securities fraud. He surrendered his passport and was released on a $10 million bond, secured by his apartment and co-signed by his wife and his brother, Peter Madoff, who was also the general counsel at his trading firm.

http://a.abcnews.com/images/GMA/abc_gma_skydiver_070306_sp.jpg

Shayna West, a woman who survived a skydiving accident hitting the payment of a parking lot at 50 mph realized something after the fall. Obama named Time's 'Person of the Year' 2008

http://whispy.com/images/obama.jpg

It may come as no shock that Time magazine named Barack Obama its "Person of the Year," but the magazine's online package does offer one surprise -- previously unseen photos of the president-elect from his formative years at Occidental College.

Time's managing editor Richard Stengel said the magazine picked Obama for his constant presence in news coverage throughout the year, and for being elected president at a "periolous" and "critical" time in American history.

Obama "energized Americans in a way that we haven't seen in a long time," Stengel said on CNN today.

Time's online package provides previously unpublished photos of Obama at Occidental College, which he attended from 1979 to 1981. The black-and-white photos were taken in 1980 by Lisa Jack, an aspiring photographer at the time, and show Obama wearing a hat and striking a variety of poses. Take a look at the photos.

Obama's time at Occidental College is a largely overlooked period of his biography, but one where he began to lay the seeds for his future in public service and politics.

The Globe's Scott Helman chronicled Obama's maturation this August in an article and video on the president-elect's years at Occidental. Here's a taste:

"Much has been made in this presidential campaign, both good and bad, of Obama's Ivy League pedigree - his bachelor's degree from Columbia University, and his law degree from Harvard, where he led the prestigious Law Review. But it is during the two years Obama spent at Occidental, a small liberal arts school in Los Angeles, that he started on the path that has led to the Democratic presidential nomination."

Alejandro Sanz

http://www.satelitemusical.net/alejandro_sanz_foto2.JPG

Alejandro Sanz
, born Alejandro Sánchez Pizarro on December 18, 1968 in Madrid, is an award winning, Spanish pop/ballad musician and singer-songwriter who has won 15 Latin Grammys, which at the time was more than any other Spanish musician in history, until being surpassed by Juanes with 17.

Biography

Alejandro Sanz is the second son of María Pizarro Medina from Alcalá de los Gazules, and Jesús Sánchez Madero from Algeciras. He began playing the guitar at the age of seven and composing his first songs three years later. The young musician started attending management classes after moving from the neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo to Moratalaz.

At the age of 16, Alejandro Sánchez recorded Los Chulos Son Pa' Cuidarlos. However, his official debut, called Viviendo Deprisa, came in 1991 after signing up with Warner Music. Si Tú Me Miras followed in 1993, featuring contributions from Nacho Mañó, Chris Cameron and Paco de Lucía. His third album, aptly titled 3, was recorded in Venice, Italy, and produced by Miguel Angel Arenas and Emanuele Ruffinengo.

1997's Más and 2000's El Alma Al Aire, the Spanish singer/songwriter achieved international top-selling status.

He also appeared in the film clip for The Corrs' English translation of their duet, "Una Noche" ("One Night") as Andrea's love interest. The video is included in The Corrs' DVD version of Best of The Corrs. In return, The Corrs sang "The Hardest Day" with him and "Una Noche" for the Spanish and Latin American edition from the 2001 Corrs' greatest hits album.

In 2001, he became the first Spanish artist to record an Unplugged for MTV.

In 2003, he recorded the album No Es Lo Mismo, which won five 2004 Latin Grammy Awards. It won Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Engineered Album with Mick Guzauski, Pepo Sherman, and Rafa Sardina as engineers.

In 2005, Sanz worked with Shakira on the hit single "La Tortura".

On September 25, 2006, Sanz released the song "A La Primera Persona". It was the first single from his new album El Tren de los Momentos which was ultimately released in November 7, 2006. The album also produced another hit duet with Shakira titled Te lo Agradezco, Pero No.

On October 2, 2007, Alejandro Sanz launched his own fragrance called "Siete" (Seven).

A Korean rendition of Sanz's "Y Si Fuera Ella" is featured on K-pop boyband SHINee's first album of 2008.

Sanz is a critic of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.[1]

Personal life

In 1995 Alejandro Sanz met Mexican model Jaydy Mitchel, they married in a private ceremony in Bali in 1998. On July 2001 the couple welcomed their first daughter, Manuela, in Madrid. In 2005 Alejandro and Jaydy split up, and he moved to Miami. At the end of 2006, Alejandro Sanz went public with the news that he had a 3 year old son, Alexander, with designer Valeria Rivera. He currently resides in Miami and visits his daughter regularly.

Controversy

Alejandro has been associated with flamenco singer 'Farruquito' whom had been found guilty of killing a pedestrian with his car while driving without a driving license. He presented 'Farrquito' during one of his concerts in Madrid, surprisingly since his act wasn't planned for the concert beforehand.

On the 1st of December 2008 Interviu magazine published an article about Alejandro supposedly being involved with the Liechtenstein tax haven case. The article claims that Alejandro could have evaded up to 420000 euros only within the 2002 fiscal year. [2]

Awards and Sales

Sanz has won a total of 17 Grammy Awards (2 Regular Grammy Award and 15 Latin Grammy Awards) and has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

Michelle Aguilar crowned the winner of 'The Biggest Loser: Families'

Michelle Aguilar entered The Biggest Loser: Families looking to lose weight and resurrect her relationship with her mother. She left it as a champion.

http://www.realitytvworld.com/images/heads/storyleads/biggestloserfamilies_finale1.jpg

Aguilar was crowned The Biggest Loser: Families' champion during last night's live finale broadcast of the NBC reality weight-loss series' sixth season.

"I'm number one!" Michelle screamed after her victory was announced and the season's 15 other contestants began congratulating her as confetti streamed down on to the finale stage.

The 26-year-old assistant director from Ft. Worth, TX started the competition at 242 pounds and lost 132 pounds for a 45.45% weight-loss percentage, claiming the show's $250,000 grand prize.

Aguilar defeated Vicky Vilcan, a 37-year-old anesthetist from Houma, LA, and Ed Brantley, a 31-year-old chef from Raleigh, NC who won The Biggest Loser: Families' home viewer vote to determine the third sixth-season finalist.

http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/michelle.jpg

During the show's finale, The Biggest Loser host Allison Sweeney revealed that despite Ed's pleas that home viewers send his wife Heba Salama, a 30-year-old pharmaceutical sales representative, to the finale weigh-in, he had won the viewer vote in a "landslide," landing 84% of the vote.

While she was disappointed that America had not listened to her husband's pleas, Heba was gracious in defeat.

http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/michelle-aguilar-makeover-201x300.jpg

"Everything happens for a reason, we have been so lucky to be on this show that honestly, because we were never here for a paycheck I just wanted the opportunity to be a finalist," Heba said.

"It's the economy," Ed joked about the home audience's decision.

Ed -- who was re-introduced into the competition on Week 7 after he had been eliminated three weeks earlier -- finished as The Biggest Loser: Families' runner-up, starting at 335 pounds and losing 139 pounds for a 41.49% weight-loss percentage. Vicky, who finished just behind Ed in third place, began the competition at 246 pounds and dropped 101 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 41.06%.

Heba's disappointment of making the Top 3 was also short lived, as she went on to win the weigh-in of The Biggest Loser: Families' 13 previously eliminated contestants and claim the consolation weigh-in's $100,000 prize. After starting the as the season's heaviest woman at 294 pounds, Heba dropped 138 pounds for a 46.9% weight-loss percentage that was actually higher than Michelle's winning percentage.

The start and finish weights and final weight-loss percentages of the 12 other previously eliminated contestants -- as well as the order in which they were booted from the competition -- were as follows.

Stacey Capers, a 33-year-old contract pricing analyst from Gainesville, VA began the competition at 221 pounds and lost 65 for a weight-loss percentage of 29.41%, while her husband Adam, a 39-year-old contracts manager, began the competition at 340 pounds before dropping 80 for a 23.53% Weight-loss percentage.

Tom "L.T." Desrochers Jr., a 22-year-old cab driver from Everett, MA, began the competition at 314 pounds before dropping 78 for a weight-loss percentage of 24.84%, while his father Tom Desrochers Sr., also a cab driver, began the competition at 357 pounds before losing 87 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 24.37%

Jerry Skeabeck, a 51-year-old police sergeant from Cleveland, OH began the competition at 380 pounds before losing 115 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 30.26%.

Shellay Cremen, a 51-year-old stay-at-home mom from Royal Oak, MI began the competition at 216 pounds before losing 74 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 34.26%.

Amy Parham, a 40-year-old real estate agent from Greer, SC began the competition at 229 pounds before dropping 105 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 45.85%, while her husband Phil began the competition at 331 pounds before losing 151 pounds for a percentage of 45.62%.

Brady Vilcan, a 36-year-old pharmacist from Houma, LA, began the competition at 341 pounds before losing 117 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 34.31%.

Coleen Skeabeck, a 23-year-old receptionist from Cleveland, OH entered the competition weighing 218 pounds before dropping 64 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 29.36%

Amy Cremen, a 26-year-old purchasing department representative from Auburn Hills, MI, entered the competition at 239 pounds before dropping 104 for a weight-loss percentage of 43.51%.

Renee Wilson, a 46-year-old event manager from Fort Worth, TX -- and the mother of the season's champion Michelle -- began the competition weighing 267 pounds before dropping 106 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 39.7%.

Kandice Hutchinson, a contestant on MTV’s Double Shot At love, has died in a horrific car accident.

Kandice Hutchinson was one of the 24 contestants competing on MTV’s reality show A Double Shot At Love. The show is similar to Tila Tequila’s Shot at Love, but this time around the competition was to win the heart of one of the bisexual Ikki twins.

TMZ discovered that back in October, Kandice was rear ended on the W. Airport Freeway in Euless, and ejected from her vehicle. Police reveal that Hutchison was thrown over the center wall into the eastbound lanes of traffic, and her car to burst into flames. She died at the scene.

Producers from the reality show have been in close contact with her family, and they remain supportive of keeping her in the show, but MTV has edited some of the scenes of her outrageous behavior, out of respect for her family.

The first episode of the show, which airs Tuesday December 9th, will reportedly be dedicated to her.

Todd Homme

Todd Homme, a 23 year old makeup artist who is appearing on the Lifetime show: Blush: The Search For The Next Great Makeup Artist was found dead in his Manhattan home.

So far, few clues point to what happened to the young man, who by all accounts, had everything going for him.

"They don't know what happened to him," said his mother Marianne Amster. "He was at the height of life. It's very hard. Very, very hard."

Homme was chosen as one of the three finalists in "Blush." He stood to win a $100,000 prize and a contract from Max Factor.

Homme did not win the show, which finished taping last month, and was aware that he had come up short in his bid.

His mother said that Todd Homme's real passion in life was to help people.

More details are expected to be released today.
